Hey room 31!
Meet carbon dioxide! It is a greenhouse gas, that is the main pollutant of air pollution.
Some people believe that air pollution will be the cause of an apocalypse in 2050! So, if this is true it's our job to take our part in saving the world. Here are some tips and facts:
A - Always put on a sweater before using the fireplace
B - Be sure to water your grass, it may sound weird but when grass is dry it could cause a wildfire/grass fire which produces lots of smoke
C - Carpool, when go to birthday parties, meetings and other events, use the same car to reduce air pollution
D - Drive only when needed, a bike ride can't hurt you
E - Encountering unpleasant odor of chemicals in the air, which is what happens to some people, which may cause people to choke or cough, which is what happens to people who have respiratory disease, and could be fatal, so take your part in keeping your community clean
F - Factories produce smoke which pollutes the air, you can prevent this by stopping construction of factories and planting trees and plants
G - Green, be green not black (the color of smoke), build a garden, participate in a community green club or tree planting, there are lots of ways to be green
H - Hybrid Cars are cars that run both on electricity and a gasoline powered engine and save energy by using their first source of energy (electricity)
I - In the Great Smog, London 1952, there were 4000 deaths because of foggy weather, 1,000 tons of smoke particles, 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide, 140 tons of hydrochloric acid, 14 tons of fluorine compounds and 370 tons of sulfur dioxide tons, you can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in our air by employing energy efficiency and conservation practices and using carbon-free or reduced-carbon energy resources
J - Just like car engines, power plants should produce nothing worse than carbon dioxide and water; in practice, fuels are dirty and they don't burn cleanly, so power plants produce a range of air pollutants, (They also release huge amounts of carbon dioxide, a key cause of global warming and climate change when it rises and accumulates in the atmosphere) so reduce the use of power plants
K - King Edward banned burning coal inside a lime kiln in London in 1307 due to air pollution, air pollution is affecting us so much that things must be banned, but if you can make changes by keeping coal burning to a minimum
L - Littering is a source of air pollution, careless people who throw cigarette butts in the grass can cause a wildfire . Throwing beer/wine bottles in the grass ALSO cause wildfires because when the suns rays heat the bottle up and all the heat will create a spark on the grass and the grass will set on fire
and those fires produce as much Co2 as a car!
M-Most people live near traffic roads. This is bad because of all our air pollution. People who live near high traffic roads have a bigger chance of getting many diseases, such as cancer heart disease, asthma and bronchitis as these places contain more concentrated levels of air pollution.
N-Never is not an option! We need to stop this now! We can make a difference in the world today in just a few steps! Most air pollution is cause by vehicles. Walk or bike to work instead of driving.
O-On a larger scale, governments are taking measures to limit emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, but you can also do your part
P- Pollution's largest cause is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. It occurs when the air contains harmful amount of gases, dust, fumes and odor, but you can eliminate those gasses!
Q- Q is for quality, urban air quality and indoor air quality are two of the most toxic pollution problems, but if you can ride a bike down the streets of New York or put on a sweater when it's zero degrees
R- Run! Put down those keys and pick up some running shoes! Running not only keeps you healthy but it reduces air pollution!
S- Stop! Stop air pollution, pick up a pen and start a petition, one less factory can save the world
T- T is for toxic. Air pollution is toxic, but if you follow these tips you can make a difference
U- Usually, primary pollutants come from volcanic eruptions but there are far more ways that allow primary pollutants to enter the air, including cars, so when visiting friends nearby, if you can use your feet!
V- Vehicles cause air pollution, but when going on trips public transportation is better than a car.
W- Wear a sweater instead of using your fireplace
X- Xylene and toluene could lead to leukemia and it can be created with polluted air (it is also found in delocalized electrons) so one less delocalized electron could prevent someone from having leukemia and if you don't pollute our air you can save someone's life!
Y- Y is for year, during the year of 1999-2000, by the University of Washington, showed that patients near and around particulates air pollution had an increased risk of pulmonary exacerbations and decrease in lung function so stay away from cigarettes
Z- Z is for zoning, There are various air pollution control technologies and land-use planning strategies available to reduce air pollution. At its most basic level, land-use planning is likely to involve zoning and transport infrastructure planning. You too, can help them out!
So remember your Air Pollution ABCs and make the world a better place!
